After the Soft Ones: Environmental Improvisation in South Africa and the US South 

Project Description

This project argues that Black improvisational practices offer unique insight into the embeddedness of race within normative conceptions of “the environment.” Analyzing contemporary performances from South Africa and the US South, it surfaces the environmentalism latent within Black improvisation, placing it in discourse with Black studies and Marxist ecology.
