Project Title
"Slavery's Empire: Reconstruction in the Black Pacific"
Project Description
Exploring themes of fugitivity, statelessness, and racial capitalism, this book manuscript will interrogate U.S. slavery, emancipation, and empire through a newly conceptualized Black Pacific framework. By mapping the everyday lives of Black transnationalists alongside the anticolonial struggles of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific, this book will argue that abolitionist emancipation fantasies alongside material transformations in the global political economy produced a 'slavery-informed empire' and that, consequently, Black subjectivity must be radically reimagined beyond the standard liberal renderings of nation, state, and citizenship.
