On Friday, January 23rd the Woodson hosted a day-long symposium focused on the life and legacy of Reginald D. Butler, marking the publication of his influential, but never published manuscript, The Evolution of a Rural Free Black Community: Goochland County, Virginia, 1728-1832 (University of Virginia Press, 2025).
Over the course of its 40 year history, the Woodson Institute has advanced African American and African Studies around the world by transforming the professoriate, training the next generation of scholars, and educating the general public about issues of race, social justice, and inequality.
