Research has been at the heart of the Carter G. Woodson Institute since 1981. The Institute supports original, interdisciplinary scholarship on the African American and African experience in a global context through its faculty, its residential fellowship program, and collaborative projects across the University.
Faculty Scholarship
Woodson faculty publish widely in history, film and media studies, visual culture, and beyond. Their books include titles in Black Studies at Work in the World, an Institute-backed series published by UVA Press.
Woodson Fellows
Each year, pre- and post-doctoral scholars join the Institute in residence to finish major research projects in a rigorous, interdisciplinary community. More than 180 fellows have gone on to shape the field of Black studies.
