Overview
The Carter G. Woodson Institute’s distinguished fellowship is a two-year residential fellowship for pre-doctoral students (ABD) whose work focuses on African American and African Diasporic Studies, including but not limited to research pertaining to African American, Caribbean, Latin American, African, and/or Diasporic contexts. Scholars selected for the fellowship are required to relocate to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia to join a cohort of interdisciplinary scholars.
Fellows receive funding for two calendar years through a twelve-month appointment, which is renewed annually. The current stipend rate begins at $50,000 in year one with a $5,000 increase in the second year. All fellows receive full-time benefits and a one-time relocation reimbursement (up to $1,000). Additionally, each fellow receives an annual allowance for research and travel-related expenses (up to $2,000, annually). Post-doctoral fellows teach one course annually in the Department of African American and African Studies (IAAS).

Eligibility and Terms/Conditions
The fellowship is open to qualified candidates without restriction as to citizenship or current residence.
Applicants for the post-doctoral fellowship must have been awarded their Ph.D. by the time of application or furnish proof from the relevant registrar that all documentation required for the Ph.D. has been submitted by July 15, 2025. As this fellowship is an early-career opportunity, post-doctoral applicants must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than six-years prior to the application deadline.
The post-doctoral fellow must be in residence at UVa in Charlottesville, Virginia for the duration of the award period, and must agree to teach one course per year in the African-American and African Studies program during the Fall or Spring semester. Woodson fellows are expected to participate in the series of workshops (about twice monthly) and to make at least one formal presentation of their work to the University community.
The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check at time of offer per University Policy.
Please note: Individuals may not apply for the Woodson pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships at the same time.
